Artist's Statement
"The earliest
I can remember painting plein air with oils was about twelve years of age.
My grandfather, a Canadian artist, used to set me up beside him and tell
me to 'paint what you see'; the best instruction I ever got! I used to win
all the art awards because "Paint by numbers" was really hot then, and I
was the only one painting from life! Drawing was my passion. I remember
once, not unlike the "Hole in One" that nobody saw, I sent a drawing into
a Buffalo, NY TV station kids' show and saw it on TV as a winner but no
one else was around to see it and of course they wouldn't believe me! The
first time I walked into the Art Students' League, I knew I had found my
place! The smell of oil paint reminded me of my grandfather.
"Inspired at an early age by my grandfather to paint only from life,
I am drawn to plein air painting. I see paintings everywhere; I'm constantly
painting in my head. My strongest influence, the Canadian landscape, brightens
my spirit and feeds my soul. I am immediately attracted to and inspired
by colourful, intimate landscapes infused with light and shadow. My 'artist's
vision' captures the essence of the moment, being out in the fresh air,
in all weather, translating feelings and impressions onto the canvas,
making a connection with the viewer who then sees the beauty in everyday
things.
"In the beginning of this grand adventure I wanted to paint, now I have
to paint. I hope my work brings as much joy to the viewer as it does to
me in the process of creating it. At last, I know who I want to be when
I grow up."
